The Ph.D. in leadership studies is designed to develop leaders who are equipped to address the complex challenges of the 21st century through a program that integrates state-of-the-art leadership curriculum, advanced research methodologies, innovative perspectives and evidence-based strategies. Our Ph.D. in Leadership Studies offers two pathways for admission:
- New Student Applicant: This route is for those holding a master’s degree and seeking direct entry into the Ph.D. program. Applicants provide evidence of academic readiness, professional experience and alignment with program goals, including the submission of standardized test scores.
- Returning Ed.D. Student Applicant: This pathway is available for Trevecca Ed.D. graduates who wish to continue their learning with a Ph.D. Eligible applicants provide a focused set of application materials and, if accepted, complete a set of additional doctoral-level courses designed to build on their Ed.D. foundation.
Both pathways are structured to ensure students are prepared for the rigors of doctoral research and leadership development.
New Student Applicant
- Educational Background: Applicants must hold an earned master's degree from a regionally accredited educational institution.
- Application Form: Complete the online application available on our admissions portal.
- Transcripts: Submit official transcripts of all graduate credits from previously attended colleges/universities. If the master's program used a "pass/fail" grading system, describe the admission requirements for that program and a letter from an institution official regarding the likelihood of the applicant's success in a doctoral program.
- GPA Requirements: Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.6 at the graduate level. Those with a GPA below 3.6 may be considered for restrictive admission.
- Letters of Recommendation: Provide three letters of recommendation from professors, employers, or associates who can evaluate your academic and professional qualifications. At least one letter should come from a university professor familiar with your academic work
- Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Submit a resume or CV detailing professional experiences that reflect readiness to enter a doctoral program in leadership.
- Statement of Purpose: Write a statement of purpose (1-2 pages, single-spaced) explaining your reasons for applying, preparation for the field, fit with our program, future career plans, and any other relevant background or interests
- Academic Writing Sample: Complete a writing sample using the provided guidance that identifies and describes the problem that the applicant wants to address with their study.
- Interview: Participate in an interview if selected for further consideration. This helps assess the applicant's fit with the program's goals and culture
Returning EdD Student Applicant
- Educational Background: Applicants must hold an earned Ed.D. degree from Trevecca.
- Application Form: Complete the online application available on our admissions portal.
- Transcripts: EdD transcripts will be reviewed
- GPA Requirements: Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.5 during their time in Trevecca's EdD program.
- The applicant will not be considered if any courses were repeated
- Letters of Recommendation: Provide three letters of recommendation:
- Two (2) EdD Professors
- EdD Dissertation Adviser
- Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Submit a resume or CV detailing professional experiences that reflect readiness to enter a doctoral program in leadership.
- Statement of Purpose: Write a statement of purpose (1-2 pages, single-spaced) explaining your reasons for applying, preparation for the field, fit with our program, future career plans, and any other relevant background or interests

The Ph.D. in leadership studies at Trevecca is structured to provide a comprehensive blend of theoretical foundations, advanced research skills and practical leadership training. The 66-credit hour curriculum is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in academia, business, government and nonprofit organizations. The program’s coursework is divided into categories for leadership; research design and analysis; and dissertation research. Each area builds upon the last, ensuring that students gain expertise and confidence as they progress.
1. Leadership Focus
- Intrapersonal Effectiveness and Collaborative Teamwork – Courses begin with an exploration of personal leadership skills and progress to advanced team-building dynamics, diversity and organizational analysis. These classes emphasize self-assessment, personal development and the critical skills needed to lead teams effectively.
- Leading Transformational Change – Students learn to navigate and lead change within organizations, covering both theory and practical application to support real-world impact.
- AI Foundations and Implications for Leadership – This course introduces students to artificial intelligence (AI) concepts and their relevance to modern leadership. Students examine ethical implications and applications of AI to foster responsible innovation.
- Specialized Leadership Courses – Topics include understanding the dynamic of leadership and followership; coaching and consulting within organizations; global issues and policy analysis; and ethical leadership and social responsibility. These courses integrate case studies, role-playing and collaborative projects to provide hands-on experience.
2. Research Design and Analysis Focus
- Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods – In two sets of courses, students develop a deep understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. They learn data collection and analysis techniques necessary for rigorous research in academic and professional contexts.
- Theoretical Foundations of Leadership – Two seminar courses emphasize the study and application of leadership theories. Through team-based research projects, students gain practical experience in research design, data analysis and scholarly writing, with the goal of submitting studies for publication.
- Research-Based Technology – This course covers essential research tools and technologies. Students build practical skills that support their dissertation work and long-term research proficiency.
3. Dissertation Research Focus
- Dissertation Research Seminars I, II, and III – These three seminar courses guide students through each phase of the dissertation process. In Seminar I, students complete their literature review, proposal and IRB application. Seminar II focuses on finalizing the literature review and developing a comprehensive methodology chapter. In Seminar III, students complete their findings, implications and recommendations, preparing for their final defense.
Throughout the program, students are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and apply their learning to real-world scenarios. The coursework integrates rigorous academic training with ethical and practical leadership skills, ensuring that graduates are ready to lead, research and make impactful contributions in various organizational and academic settings.
